Born on 13th of October 1927 in Linz, Austria

Education

1945/46 Medical studies in Innsbruck and Vienna
1954 Graduation as Medical Doctor

Professional career

1955 Starts scientific career at the Institute of Hygiene, University of Vienna
since 1957 Research focus on TBE
1961/62 Research stay at the New York Rockefeller Laboratories
1965 Habilitation, granting of the status Univ.-Dozent
1971 Appointed first Head of the newly founded Institute of Virology, University of Vienna
1996 Resignation as Professor on the occasion of his 69th birthday

Milestones

1967 Participates in discovering the Marburg virus
1973 First TBE vaccine developed by Kunz and his English research partner Professor Keppie after 2 years of research
24.04.1973 Kunz and his co-worker Professor Hofmann test the vaccine and demonstrate its efficacy
1974-1976 Together with his wife and some of his colleagues, Kunz tours through Austria, vaccinating thousands of people, mainly foresters and farmers
1976 Immuno (now Baxter) AG markets TBE vaccine in Austria
1981 First TBE vaccination campaign launched in Austria
2006 Kunz first researcher to be awarded the Löffler-Frosch medal for his lifetime achievement by the Society for Virology
30.10.2007 Kunz appointed Honorary Member of the ISW-TBE

Kunz is author and co-author of more than 330 scientific publications.
